Cesária Evora

Cesária Evora

Cabo Verde
Cesária Évora, the "Barefoot Diva," was an enigmatic force of nature who transformed Cape Verdean morna into a universal language. Born in Mindelo, she spent decades singing for tips in local sailors' bars, enduring poverty, alcoholism, and a ten-year musical silence before achieving international superstardom in her fifties with the 1992 masterpiece “Miss Perfumado.” Her deep, smoky alto voice carried the profound weight of saudade, a bittersweet, poetic longing born from her nation's history of slavery, colonization, and forced migration. From underground electronic remixers to massive crowds in the Antilles, audiences worldwide flocked to her concerts to immerse themselves in her ancient pain. Despite winning a Grammy, Évora rejected superficial fame, famously performing barefoot and wandering Mindelo in a house apron and plastic hair rollers. Before passing away in 2011, she reigned as a soulful maternal figure and Cape Verde’s ultimate cultural ambassador
