The revolt was sparked by the arrest of a farmer named Frederick Bezuidenhout for mistreating his Khoikhoi servant, leading to a clash between frontier justice and British legal reform. When Bezuidenhout was killed resisting arrest, his brother Hans led a small band of rebels who refused to swear allegiance to the Crown. The rebellion was crushed, and six Afrikaners were publicly hanged at Slachter's Nek, their bodies left to rot as a warning. This event became a foundational martyr story for Afrikaner nationalism, even though it was less about apartheid and more about British imperialism.
