In the 1820s, as Shaka's Zulu kingdom rose in the southeast, a lesser-known chieftain named Zwangendaba led a splinter group of the Ngoni people on an epic migration north. Over the course of nearly two decades, Zwangendaba's followers traversed over 2,000 kilometers, cutting a swath through what is now Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Malawi, and Tanzania. They clashed with local chiefdoms, incorporated captives as new clans, and even founded a short-lived dynasty in the Songea region of present-day Tanzania.
