Before Mansa Musa became a legend, another king of Mali made the hajj that set the template. Mansa Uli, grandson of Sundiata Keita, ruled from around 1260 to 1270 and became the first West African monarch to perform the pilgrimage to Mecca in grand style. This episode explores Uli's reign: how he expanded Mali's borders, conquered the Songhai city of Gao, and established the diplomatic and religious precedents that Mansa Musa would later amplify. We discuss the sources—Ibn Khaldun's chronicles, the Tarikh al-Sudan, and oral traditions preserved by griots—and what they reveal about Uli's character, his meeting with the Mamluk sultan Baibars, and the building of the first royal mosque in Timbuktu. Along the way, we confront the tension between Islamic piety and traditional Mande spiritual practices, and ask: was Uli the true architect of Mali's golden age? #MaliEmpire #MansaUli #WestAfricanHistory #MedievalAfrica #Hajj #IbnKhaldun #TarikhAlSudan #SundiataKeita #SonghaiEmpire #Gao #Timbuktu #Mande #Baibars #MamlukSultanate #Griots #AfricanIslam #MedievalHistory #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
