In 1375, the Mali Empire faced a crisis that would reshape the Sahel. Mansa Djata, the grandson of Sundiata Keita, took the throne after a period of decline under Mansa Maghan. But his reign was immediately challenged by the Songhai people of Gao, who had once been loyal vassals. Under the leadership of Sonni Ali, the Songhai launched a rebellion that would eventually lead to the rise of the Songhai Empire. This episode explores the battle of Tindirma, the political maneuvering of the Dyula merchants, and the role of the farari warriors in defending the empire. We also look at the controversial accounts from Ibn Khaldun and the Tarikh al-Sudan, which offer conflicting views on Djata's reign. Was he a weak ruler or a victim of circumstances? And how did the loss of Gao set the stage for the Mali Empire's slow decline? #MansaDjata #SonghaiRebellion #SonniAli #Gao #MaliEmpire #WestAfrica #Sahel #IbnKhaldun #TarikhAlSudan #Farari #Dyula #Tindirma #KeitaDynasty #Mande #Niani #History #FexingoHistory #MedievalAfrica Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
