When Mansa Musa left for Mecca in 1324, he appointed his son Muhammad as regent — but the real power rested with the Gbara, the great assembly of clan chiefs, military commanders, and griots that had governed Mali since Sundiata Keita founded the empire in 1235. This episode explores how the Gbara worked: its 29 seats representing the original clans of the Manden, its role in electing and deposing mansas, and its checks on imperial power. We examine the Gbara's most dramatic moment — the deposition of Mansa Maghan I after just four years on the throne — and its gradual decline as later mansas centralised authority. Drawing on the Kouroukan Fouga charter, the Tarikh al-Sudan, and the oral traditions preserved by the jeliw, we uncover a sophisticated system of constitutional governance that limited even the wealthiest emperor in history. How did a medieval West African empire balance royal power with aristocratic consensus? The answer lies in the Gbara, one of history's most remarkable political experiments. #MaliEmpire #Gbara #Mande #KouroukanFouga #SundiataKeita #MansaMusa #MansaMaghanI #TarikhAlSudan #Jeliw #Niani #AfricanHistory #ConstitutionalGovernance #MedievalAfrica #WestAfrica #OralTradition #Empire #FexingoHistory #History Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
