Journey
Abiodun Abraham Oke, widely known as Wura Samba, stands as a luminary in the world of Afro-folklore music. Born in the vibrant community of Mushin, Lagos on January 3, 1970, his early life was rich with sounds and rhythms emanating from both his family and the balcony of his local church. The trajectory of his life changed direction at just five years old when a prophecy led his father to gift him a Sambabe Drum—a moment that would anchor his musical destiny. Wura Samba's signature style, coined as 'Afro-folklore, traditional percussive music', is an innovative confluence of jazz, juju, Afrobeat, and reggae. His body of work reflects a commitment to cultural narration and rhythmic architecture, with critically-acclaimed albums such as 'Ajo' in 2009 and 'ONALA' in 2020 showcasing his vibrant soundscapes. Beyond his solo repertoire, Wura has engaged deeply with the wider musical universe through collaborations with Tony Allen, Nneka, and Keziah Jones, and global initiatives like Ten Cities, a creative exploration by the Goethe-Institut, and Gidi Jand under the British Council. This breadth of collaboration and cultural dialogue affirms his standing as both a national treasure and an essential voice in the global percussion-driven music scene.
