Journey
Bakanzo Monza, professionally known as Monza Premier (also credited as Monza 1er), is a celebrated Congolese musician, singer, composer, and bandleader, recognized for his pivotal contributions to Soukous and Rumba Rock. Born in Congo-Brazzaville, he rose to prominence in the 1980s and 1990s, first within the Congolese music scene and later in France, crafting a style that fused traditional rumba with electric-guitar-driven rock influences.
Monza Premier emerged during a golden era of African music, earning acclaim as a lead singer for the influential Congolese orchestra Choc Stars. Seeking his own artistic identity, he later formed Les Stars Magnats, where he pioneered the “Rumba Rock” aesthetic, blending smooth rumba melodies with faster Soukous rhythms and modern production. His 1986 album "Fleur du Lac" and tracks like Melina showcase his melodic tenor voice, intricate guitar arrangements, and lyrical focus on romance and social themes.
Throughout his career, Monza collaborated widely in both Congolese and Parisian African music circles, including performances with Orchestre De La Voix Du Zaire, leaving an enduring mark on African music by bridging traditional rumba with contemporary instrumentation. His legacy secures him a lasting place in Soukous and Rumba Rock history.
